Hello, welcome to my blog. My name is Leno.
This blog is new. It launched in April 2020. As for me, I’ve been doing online marketing since 2007.
Am I successful one? I share with you below.
I remember 2007 as a turning point for my entire life course.
Before 2007, I worked as a cook helper. So moved from doing something offline to online is both challenging and overwhelming.
I knew nothing about online marketing. I knew nothing about making money from the Internet.
But my logic said, ‘to do online marketing, you need a website’.
So that’s where I began. Turned out, making a website is hard. I knew nothing about coding.
In short, the year of 2007 introduced me to WordPress. I bought a book about how to install WordPress on a local computer. This book is truly helpful.
I had only $40 to start. So I invested in the domain and hosting.
In November, I launched my first affiliate website using WordPress.
Four days later a $39 commission pop up. At the end of the month, the sites generated around $300.
The site made me believe that making money online is possible even for a regular newbie like me.
So I continue my journey, but the happy story is not always there to tell.
Here is what happened.
This was the years where I actively built my affiliate sites empire. I could say that I am pretty good at it.
My sites ranked on various buyer keywords on Google, resulting in plenty of affiliate sales. Life is good, at least until 2012.
A few friends and I built a membership site offering a course on how to make money online as an affiliate marketer. Result? We failed miserably. No one joins in. Our marketing was dull that time.
So i just focused on building my affiliate sites.
This is the time when Google algorithms hit. All my sites tanked, disappeared from page one of Google and so my earnings. My financial severely impacted.
Rebuilt my affiliate sites only to know that to make it ranked on Google is harder than before. Few of them reach page one of Google but not last for long. I kept doing this for new sites over and over until I fed up, so I stopped.
While experimenting with Google, a friend asked me to help him promote his clothing lines. So I joined him as a partner.
I use FB ads to drive traffic to the site, and sales just went to the roof – yes, it is possible during those days. Happy ending? Not at all. If he respects the agreement in the first place, it will go well, but he wasn’t. So I leave.
Still in 2015
I changed my business model from affiliate site to content site. So I heard Google love content so much, so I built this architecture website and drove traffic from FB ads to specific pages on my site.
These pages contain Google Adsense and native ads. This method called arbitrage. In two weeks, the site generated almost $2000, and I spent $500 for FB ads, excellent ROI I think.
This is good until the day I receive the commission. Adsense cut 75% of my earnings. The reason was that Adsense determined that the source of traffic is not legitimate.
So my FB ads spent bloated and my earning got slashed, leaving me with a minus. So I stop this content site. If money is not an issue in those days, I might try other advertising methods. So, in this case, I failed.
Do you know ThisIsWhyImBroke site? I love the site, and it inspired me enough to finally made one like it.
I posted plenty of unique gadgets on the site. One of them is a tiny drone, this the smallest drone in the world and sold in Amazon.
I use Reddit to promote the post. I got $400 in just one day doing that. So I repeated the process and made money that way.
The problem is, Reddit shadowbanned me. That’s the end of my gadget site.
Still in 2016
I need to try something different. So I decided to sell something on Amazon. I did my research and end up with a heat resistant silicone glove as a promising product to sell.
I ordered 2000 pairs from China by finding the factory using Alibaba. Sent them to Amazon Fulfilment Center and started selling.
Sales were coming in and so the competitors. Suddenly, there are too many sellers selling the same gloves, and they just private label it.
Some of the sellers are big players, leaving me no chance to survive. So a few months later, 2000 pairs of gloves were sold. I discontinued the production. I failed again.
The days of eCommerce. This is the year when I learned about dropshipping.
In short, I created an online shop using Shopify and dropship products from Aliexpress using Oberlo.
I use FB Ads to drive traffic. I sold necklaces and rings through my store. Cashflow was impressive and stable. I love how everything works. But why I stopped?
Facebook is an unstable advertising platform. New algorithm coming out in almost every three months.
Every new algorithm impacted my successful ads. In short, my credit card bills exceeded my store income. So I stopped.
A few friends offered me to join them on their digital marketing agency. It ended up with we created a new agency.
Our first client is a financial company who provide lending. They need help with SEO.
We quoted them the cost, and they agreed and paid 50% upfront. So we have the money to start the SEO project.
This finance company also hired another agency to help them with Google Ads. At the end of the month, both agencies should provide a report.
I was so surprised to witness from the report that the number of leads coming from SEO is way higher compared to leads coming from Google Ads.
The company too, getting cheaper leads from SEO compared to Ads. This makes my love for SEO is 100% back.
Sadly, this first client is also our last client. My friends have other businesses to focus on. So we split.
2018 – 2020
The result from serving this finance company with SEO is staggering me still. I think why did I not use this information to my benefit?
I could generate leads and then sell the leads, or I could provide leads and take a commission as an affiliate, this seems to be a good idea. So I did it.
Shortly, I found a reputable finance company to work with, and I started my stuff on SEO, and I use Google Ads to accelerate the process. And yes, as predictable, the results are satisfying.
Since 2019-2020 I enjoyed a stable income by generating leads for this finance company. I could even hire two nice girls as my employee.
Well, in 2020 Coronavirus struck. Finance company stop selling for a while now. So I postponed my Google Ads while the SEO side keeps sending me leads that I can manage later when the company start selling again.
What does this leave me?
2020 and beyond
